The river splits the city
Nottingham divides roughly at the Trent. South of it are West Bridgford and Ruddington, flatter and quieter, in Rushcliffe. North and west are the centre, Beeston, Lenton, Radford and Wollaton. North again the ground climbs into Sherwood, Mapperley and Arnold. It is a compact place, so these are short distances that end up feeling much bigger than they measure.
Read the tram map first
The tram shapes commuting here more than anything else. Two lines run north to south through the centre, reaching Hucknall and Phoenix Park at one end and Clifton and Toton Lane at the other. Live on a line and you stop thinking about the journey. Live off one and you are on the bus network, which is good, but it is not the same thing.
Close does not mean quick
Everything in Nottingham looks near on a map, and at nine at night it is. At half eight in the morning the ring road, the river crossings and Derby Road past the hospital are all slow, and a three mile commute can take longer than a ten mile one in a different direction. Test the journey at the hour you would actually be doing it.
What people get wrong here
Two things, mainly. The first is choosing a street near the universities because it looked cheap and central in August, then meeting it properly in October. Lenton, Dunkirk and parts of Radford are heavily student. The second is assuming anywhere close in must be on the tram. Plenty of good areas are not, and that shapes your day more than the rent does.
An NG postcode is not Nottingham
NG addresses run a long way past the city boundary. Long Eaton and Sandiacre carry Nottingham postcodes and sit in Derbyshire, and much of the NG range is county rather than city. It matters, because the council, the council tax bill and the school admissions authority all change at that boundary even when the address still says Nottingham on it.
The villages people end up in
Plenty of people arrive aiming for the centre and settle outside it. Ruddington, Keyworth and East Leake are south, Radcliffe on Trent, Burton Joyce and Lowdham run east along the Lincoln line, and Southwell is further out again. They are quieter and often better value for the space. The trade is that you are tied to a timetable or to the car.
How people actually get about
The buses are colour coded by route, which sounds trivial and is the fastest way to learn the shape of the city. The tram park and ride sites at Phoenix Park, Wilkinson Street, the Forest, Toton Lane and Clifton South are genuinely well used, and a lot of people who own a car never drive it into the middle. That is a choice about cost, not virtue.
See the street twice
A weekday viewing tells you very little. On street parking that looks easy at eleven in the morning is full at seven in the evening, a road near a school is a different road at half three, and a gradient you did not notice from the car is real on foot carrying shopping. Walk it once in the evening and once at the weekend.

Which part of Nottingham should I be in?
Most of what you would need day to day sits in the city centre, the Lace Market, West Bridgford and Beeston. Tell us where you need to be each morning rather than which postcode you fancy, and we will be honest about what is close to it and what only looks close.
Can I park in Nottingham?
City centre parking is paid and the residential streets close in are permit zones. The tram and the park and ride sites take most of the pain out of it if you are commuting to the edge of the city, and are worth using rather than driving into the middle twice a day.
How easy is it to get around Nottingham without a car?
The tram runs from the station through the centre to Hucknall and Clifton, and London is an hour and three quarters.
What is there to do in Nottingham on a day off?
The Castle, Wollaton, the Lace Market and the arena are all central, Trent Bridge and the two football grounds sit together across the river, and Sherwood and the Peak District are inside an hour. For a compact city there is more within reach than there appears to be.

Can my employer be invoiced?
Yes, and it is common with a relocation package. We invoice the company for the agreed number of weeks with a purchase order reference, and you extend privately after that if you need longer.
How long do people usually stay?
Six to twelve weeks is the common shape: long enough to find somewhere permanent, do the referencing and wait out a notice period. The rate improves past the first month, so tell us your best guess and we will price it for that rather than for a fortnight.
Is there a tenancy or a credit check?
No. This is a booking, not a tenancy, so there is no referencing, no guarantor and no protected deposit. That is particularly useful if you have just moved country and have no UK credit history yet, which is the thing that stops most relocations dead.
Can the family come once I have found somewhere?
Yes, and it is worth telling us at the start. Whether you need two bedrooms from week one or from week five changes which property makes sense, and moving you twice helps nobody.
