Royal Derby Hospital is a drive
Royal Derby Hospital sits on Uttoxeter Road on the west side of the city rather than in the centre. From the middle of Derby that is a short drive or a bus along Uttoxeter New Road, but it is not a walk you would want to do twice a day in January. Littleover and Mickleover are the closest residential areas to it.
London Road is the other site
London Road Community Hospital is a separate building, closer in, on London Road heading south east out of the centre. If your rota sends you to both in the same week that matters, because they sit on opposite sides of Derby. The cross city run at eight in the morning is slower than the distance on the map suggests.
Parking, and why it decides things
Hospital parking here is the usual story: not guaranteed, not free, and gone early. A property with its own parking space is worth more to you than one two streets closer in. Ask what the parking actually is before you commit to anywhere: an allocated bay, a permit street, or hopeful. The answer changes every shift you work.
Sleeping in daylight after nights
Night shifts are won and lost on the room, not the postcode. A flat that is quiet at ten in the evening can be impossible at two in the afternoon with traffic outside and bins going. Ask which way the bedroom faces, whether it sits on a through road, and what the curtains are like. Better answered before you arrive.
The trust runs Burton as well
Royal Derby and Queen's Hospital in Burton upon Trent belong to the same trust, and plenty of rotas cross between the two. Burton is straight down the A38 to the south west, which is a proper drive rather than a hop across town. If your placement covers both sites, the A38 rather than the city centre is the thing to plan around.
Eating after a late finish
Derby stops serving early on weeknights. Come off a late shift hungry and the Cathedral Quarter will be calling last orders, leaving the takeaways along Normanton Road and whatever you put in the fridge on your day off. Worth knowing in week one rather than week three, because the kitchen is what actually gets you through a rota.
The mistake is defaulting to central
Staff on placement often pick the middle of the city because it looks sensible on a map, then spend three months driving west to Uttoxeter Road and paying to park at both ends of it. If the work is at Royal Derby, the western side of Derby usually wins. The centre only makes sense if you are based at London Road.
A day off without driving far
Markeaton Park sits off Ashbourne Road on the way out of town, Kedleston Hall is a few miles further along Kedleston Road past the university, and Allestree Park is north of both. All three are on the hospital side of Derby rather than the far side of it, which makes them realistic between shifts instead of a whole day out.

Royal Derby sits south west of the centre on Uttoxeter Road and is the main site for University Hospitals of Derby and Burton. It is a fifteen minute drive from the middle of the city and an awkward walk, so parking matters here in a way it does not in Manchester.

That is the question worth asking and most listings dodge it. Ask us about the specific flat: which way the bedroom faces, whether it is on a main road, what the blackout is like. We would rather have that conversation before you book than have you lying awake at two in the afternoon.
How long can I stay?
